I will take yams any way I can get them, but this is definitely something I can’t take my mind off of. Many recipes try to sweeten up yams, but they are sweet by nature.

I love this recipe because it combines the natural candy flavor of yams with some of my favorite savory herbs and spices. This goes great with breakfast, as a post-workout accompaniment, or just because…

Savory Yam Hash

Prep time: 25 minutes

Serves: 4


1 large yam or 2 medium yams, peeled and cut in fourths

2 garlic cloves, sliced thinly

1 cup sweet onion, thinly sliced

1 teaspoon white pepper

1 teaspoon dried sage

1 tablespoon grass-fed butter

A dash of salt


  1. Shred yams in food processor or with cheese grater.
  2. Preheat saute pan on stove at medium high heat.
  3. Place yams in medium bowl and combine with all other ingredients except butter.
  4. Add butter to hot pan and toss in yams.
  5. Saute for several minutes until yams turn bright orange.
  6. Lower temp to medium low and let brown on one side.
  7. Sautee again until yams are soft and a bit crispy (about ten minutes).
  8. Serve warm.
